Purchase a Raspberry Pi 4 Kit that students can program for their own computer lab

Ever since the LCRC was connected to the internet in November of 2019, students and teachers have been taking full advantage by watching educational videos and connecting to the digital world. More than 80 students have become LCRC members in order to participate in computer training classes and use the computers to study in the evenings. For the first time, students at the schools in Nyegina are now able to sign up for the computer section of the national exam that is needed to enter into IT fields at the university level!

There are more than 3,000 students in the LCRC service area, but only 10 computers currently. We have dreamed of filling up two rooms with computers ever since construction was completed in 2016. Unfortunately, the price tag has been prohibitively high for 30-40 computers. However, in 2019 we connected with faculty at the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology and developed a new plan to fill the computer labs.

Using the affordable Raspberry Pi 4 kits, we plan to work with students and faculty at DIT to empower the students in Nyegina to build their own computer labs. We plan to purchase and ship 40 Raspberry Pi 4 kits to Tanzania where DIT students will work directly with students at the LCRC to build and program all of the computers for the computer labs. Not only has this cut the price of the computers from $40,000 to less than $10,000, it also provides an opportunity for students in the Mara region to learn a valuable skill. Our hope is that students will not only build their own computer labs, they will also have the skills to start building affordable computers that can be installed at other schools in the area!

Help us make this incredible opportunity a reality in 2021 by purchasing a Raspberry Pi 4 kit on behalf of the students in the Mara region. A kit, monitor, mouse, keyboard, and other equipment is about $250 after shipping and import taxes. DIT students will be receiving internship credits needed to graduate, so there is no installation cost for the computers!
